Astrology is the ancient language of the heavens — a way of understanding how cosmic patterns mirror the rhythm of human life. It reveals the interplay between fate and free will, helping us see meaning in both movement and stillness. Together, astrology and art form a quiet dialogue between intellect and intuition, offering a way to explore truth, beauty, and the subtle wisdom that connects us to something greater.
The Origins
Of Astrology Western astrology traces its roots back nearly 4,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia. By the first millennium BCE, its ideas had travelled to Egypt, where the twelve‑sign zodiac began appearing on temple ceilings and tombs. This blending of Mesopotamian and Egyptian traditions gave rise to Hellenistic astrology, which flourished throughout the Mediterranean from the first century BCE to the seventh century CE. It was within this tradition that the Ascendant and the twelve houses first appeared — foundations still used today.
My own practice is rooted in these classical methods, especially the timing techniques developed by Abu Maʿshar (787–886) for both natal and mundane astrology. I am also a certified Horary Astrologer through the School of Traditional Astrology (STA), trained in the William Lilly tradition.
Hellenistic Astrology - The Lots of Fortune
In traditional astrology, the Lot of Fortune stands foremost among the seven Hermetic Lots — ancient points of calculation preserved from the Hellenistic and Egyptian lineage of astrology. These Lots were attributed to Hermes Trismegistus and the priest‑astrologers of Egypt, who wove celestial mathematics with spiritual philosophy.
The Lot of Fortune is measured through the relationship between the Ascendant, Sun, and Moon — the three pillars of embodiment, vitality, and spirit. In essence, it translates the dance between light and reflection into a single point on the chart, marking where fate meets embodiment.
It governs what unfolds beyond our control: the events, patterns, and encounters that shape our path. Some experiences arise not by choice but by fate, their reasons may remain mysterious, yet they form the architecture of who we become. Fortune reveals the architecture of circumstance — the unseen mathematics behind opportunity, loss, relationship, and turning points that emerge without our asking. It does not erase responsibility or free will; rather, it clarifies the distinction between what we initiate and what is initiated for us.
To recognise the Lot of Fortune is to honour the dialogue between intention and reception — how we meet what comes, how we translate the unforeseen into meaning, and how recurring motifs invite growth rather than resignation. In this way, Fortune becomes both challenge and gift: a reminder that grace and transformation often arrive through what we never planned. It is the celestial whisper that even chance carries purpose — that the ancient Hermetic art still speaks through the stars, weaving our human story with mystery and meaning.
